Masters of sludge, evolutionists of Post-Rock, and Podcast heroes - get to grips with our questionnaire...

How did the recording sessions for your new release go?
Very well, the journey to the studio was an adventure in itself so when we arrived we were already up for it. We recorded all together in one room so it was just like playing live really. No sitting about waiting for the drum tracks to be finished etc.

What do you feel are your own limitations when it comes to creating/writing music?
Just to get good takes, with the right feel and at the right tempo, which I think we just about managed.

Tell us 3 of your favourite songs from your career and the inspiration behind them?
All your Witches and Bitches (2007 EP) - It’s just such a woolly mammoth of a song, to play or listen to. And when we play the opening section I wish I played guitar instead of drums, as the riff is awesome.

Aldershof (2006 demo) - because it really came together well during the recording - sometimes it works that way. Also, it is great to play live as we get right into it, which is always the best way.

Bilge Rat (2007 EP) this one was featured on the cover CD of Rock Sound magazine in October and we had a good response from that. Also it is a great track to start a set with - it grabs peoples attention straight away.

Tell us about your worst live show yet?
None with this band, they have all been great. We had some technical hitches with the electronics, but we managed to iron them out before we went out and played live, basically by ditching the whole lot! So far though, we have been on the bill with some quality bands and played to packed out venues, which is a honour.

What are the bands plans for the rest of the year?
We are recording a split single with Black Cesar for release early next year. The writing and recording should take us up to Christmas which is a nice end to a great year so far.

How would you describe your own/bands sound?
We are always getting compared to Neurosis and Khanate which is very flattering. I think though we are different to most of the other bands in this genre in terms of the way we structure songs, you get more riff per dollar in a Zonderhoof track than your average sludgy doom band.

Who is currently moving you musically at the moment?
Bands like Orthodox

What album changed your life and why?
Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments

It’s just the best record they ever did. Mental production, wild guitar overdubs, awesome drumming and great structures. It changed the way I thought about music altogether.

What are your requirements for a great show?
Play well, actual people watching, cool bands on the bill - all make for a great night.

Your proudest achievement so far? To actually get a record released as we’ve been doing this for a long time, and finally for someone to want to pay money to release your music is a great feeling.

If you could erase one single/album from history (your own or someone else's) which would it be and why?
I'd erase all Mitzavalarian folk music

How do you see yourself altering the band and your sound in the future? is there anything you wish to attempt in the future that's inspiring you right now? We are gonna get rid of our second guitarist as he’s just not pulling his weight - lol

A rumour you'd like to start about yourself, or one you'd like stopped?
Its all rumours isn’t it? Or do you know something that we don’t?

What drives you & What are your fears?
Keeping playing and stopping playing

The revolution comes, who would you like to be first against the wall (and if you're feeling particularly bitchy, a second, third, fourth and so on...)?
Porl Omsk - If he’s now no longer in the band he deserves to die!

Best piece of advice you'd give to aspiring musicians, or the best piece of advice you were given when you started?
Don’t play drums - its too much equipment to pack and unpack, you don’t get any girls or glory, its harder to learn and more expensive to run. Be a singer!

If you're in a car going at the speed of light, and someone turns the headlamps on, would they do anything?
You wouldn’t need lights as you’d be at your destination before the light came on.

TOP 5 IPOD TUNES

  1. Keelhaul - The Gooch
  2. Melvins - Anaconda
  3. Mastodon - Hearts Alive
  4. 1349 - Nathicana
  5. Baroness - Isak

Some are old favourites and some just because we're listening to what's about at the moment.
