Hakken! In 2007 this Welsh based band surprise everybody with a garden gnome that featured as art work on their debut CDEP. I enjoyed that record a lot and I was anxious for the follow up that took over four years to complete. So, this ‘Hakken!’ (I think it’s the Dutch word they have used for chopping) is a kind of debut and contains seven mostly instrumental songs that blow your socks off! To be fair, I kind of drifted away during the first two songs ‘Smoking Ears Screaming Teeth’ and ‘Hogslayer’, not paying much attention because it all sounded so obvious and known . But from the third song onwards Zonderhoof led me in one swift go to the screaming in the fifth song with the exciting title ‘Swords Were No Match For The Plague Of Flesh Eating Pigs’. It just grabbed me by the throat from that moment onwards and I actually started missing the vocals. It’s like eating hard-boiled eggs without salt or a pie without a cherry on top. Does it mean it’s bad food or uneatable? No, but it adds that extra flavor! A lard and greasy production finishes it off and if you add the Neurosis and The Melvins quality to the mix, you got it! You can get the CD by buying the UK based magazine Terrorrizer part 214 for free. How’s that for a treat?!

(An excellent album, a must have for every fan of this metal niche.)
